Kathmandu: At least 10 people have died and seven others were injured due to continuous heavy rains and flash floods in Vietnam’s northwestern mountainous regions, authorities said on Sunday. The worst-affected areas include Tien Dinh and Sa Duong in Dien Bien province, where the disaster has caused significant loss of life and property.
According to Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture, relentless rains from Thursday to Saturday triggered flash floods and landslides, cutting off numerous remote villages and severely hampering rescue and relief efforts.
Emergency response teams deployed helicopters on Saturday to rescue those trapped and to deliver food, medical supplies, and other essentials. Most affected residents were evacuated to safer locations, and electricity and communication services were largely restored by Sunday evening.
The floods also wreaked havoc on the agricultural sector, sweeping away crops, livestock, and poultry, inflicting considerable economic damage. This disaster follows a similar flood incident in Son La province last month, where five people lost their lives.
Vietnam frequently suffers from natural disasters. Typhoon Yagi, which struck the country in September 2024, claimed 345 lives and caused an estimated $3.3 billion in economic damage.
